However, the length is neither as limited as a typical homework problem nor as extensive as a typical course paper. That is, the discussion paper be succinct with the essential elements covered with minimal extraneous material. Elements of the discussion paper include: Given/Find (introduction): Provide your interpretation of the problem/task in brief – perhaps a paragraph or two. Solution (answer): Summarize the various reference documents and analyze the similarities and dissimilarities (compare/contrast). Use of tables and figures for summarization and discussion related to those tables and figures is expected. Conclusions (reflection): How does impact you and your conception of transportation? Note: they are 8 references that need to be compared. These References are “we are collecting the viewpoints of several students regarding their knowledge and

Arabia: Mecca, Medina(Mine), Tabuk, and Buraydah, Jeddah.”CEE 792

The References portion is highly individual-based with each student expected to acquire and
share information related to the topic throughout the duration of the topic. It is critical that
each student acquire the information, both initially and additively, before each class discussion
session in order to facilitate the class discussions. Expect that individual students will share their
information and perspectives each class session.
o By initially, expectations are that students come prepared the first session of each topic
with some material related to the topic, whether researched via internet/journal sources or
by taking notes from provided references. Each student should do this and be able to
discuss the information during class.
o By additively, expectations are that enhancement of the individual student reference
information will occur throughout the duration of the topic. Each student may share
information that other students may not have thought of which may then spark further
individual student effort. The individual reference documents will not be final until the end
of the topic duration, at which time students will post the individual documents to D2L for
shared access with the other students.
o Further details regarding the References portion as to suggested, base (i.e., expected or
average) content are below.

The Discussion Paper portion involves coalescence of the individual student reference
documents and class discussions into an individual student summary document. Students will
have a few days to develop this document. The Discussion Paper is not to be lengthy but be a
concise summary from the perspective of each individual student of the discussion culminating
from the References but may also involve additional material gathered or developed by each
individual student (e.g., maps, tables, figures). Further details regarding the Discussion Paper
portion as to suggested, base (i.e., expected or average) content are below.

For HW #1, we are collecting the viewpoints of several students regarding their knowledge and
experience of transportation internationally – with information regarding the questions of why, what,
where, how, and when of the transportation network to the extent possible. Currently (1/15/2020), we
have 7 students and 1 professor participating in the course. The seven students originated from China
(1), Ghana (1), China (1), and Saudi Arabia (4), these latter 4 coming from different cities within Saudi
Arabia: Mecca, Medina, Tabuk, and Qassim. The professor is from the USA, more specifically familiar
with Iowa, Minnesota, and South Dakota. Additionally, some of the students have travelled in other
countries such as Europe and Malaysia or other parts of the USA and might therefore offer viewpoints
regarding these parts of the world as well.
Regarding the questions, we seek to answer these as related to the transportation network in each
country, for example as follows:

why: likely influences on the location and characteristics of the transportation network
what: types/extents of the transportation network (highway, rail, water, air, pipeline)
where: by type, location of the network – related to why as one end might have product and
the other end might have consumer
how: characteristics of the network
when: history of the development of the transportation network
Sample Information to Gather (base):

Demographics
o area and population
o population mobility – travel modes
o major regions (area, population, rough location, rough description)
o major cities (area, population, rough location, rough description)
Topography and Climate – perhaps by region
Products/Markets – agricultural, industrial, technological, etc.
Transportation Network: highway, rail, water, air, pipeline
o extent (mileage) and human/product transport
o highway-specific
 classification characteristics – freeway, expressway, arterial, collector, local
 geometric characteristics – number of lanes, horizontal alignment, vertical alignment,
intersections, interchanges, etc.
 operational characteristics – traffic, vehicle mix, operator characteristics, level-ofservice, safety (crash history), etc.
Throughout our class discussion, we may identify other relevant and desirable information.

Provide reference information (e.g., links, sources) to aid your fellow students.

Your references document should primarily be a bulleted list of information related to the country (and
region for the Saudi Arabian students) that provides the class with information needed for the
subsequent discussion papers.
