Please select ONE of the following three options to write about for your first essay.  OPTION 1: The Celebration (1998) was the first film to emerge from the Danish collective Dogme95, led by auteur / enfant terrible Lars von Trier. How was The Celebration, and Dogma 95 (the alternative English rendering) more generally, received at the time? (Look at contemporaneous articles in the trade magazine Variety, The New York Times, and/or film magazines such as Cineaste, Film Comment, or Sight and Sound for a sampling!) What are several aspects of the film that were particularly striking to you–describe them in detail! Inform your thinking by checking out this short documentary on Dogme–how does the “Vow of Chastity” manifest itself in The Celebration? OPTION 2: 12:08, East of Bucharest (2006) was part of the emerging Romanian New wave of the 2000s. How was 12:08, and Romanian national cinema of the time more generally, received at the time? (Look at contemporaneous articles in the trade magazine Variety, The New York Times, and/or film magazines such as Cineaste, Film Comment, or Sight and Sound for a sampling!) What are several aspects of the film that were particularly striking to you–describe them in detail! Consider how the film has maintained its relevance–witness the recent survey of 30 top “post-Soviet” films by the European Film Academy! OPTION 3: Claire Denis is known as an auteur–a director with a distinctive voice and vision. How was 35 Shots of Rum (2008) received when it was released? (Look at contemporaneous articles in the trade magazine Variety, The New York Times, and/or film magazines such as Cineaste, Film Comment, or Sight and Sound for a sampling!) What are several aspects of the film that were particularly striking to you–describe them in detail! What are the discussions around Denis and her current film Stars at Noon (2022), premiering at the Cannes Film Festival (which is happening RIGHT NOW)? Your first essay (1000 words minimum) should be uploaded to Blackboard (in MS Word or as a PDF) by Monday night (5/30).
